I am a 1981 graduate of SIU and I oversee/supervise the Forest Inventory & Analysis (FIA) program for the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC). For whatever reason, there is a lack of foresters on our job registers so I thought you might be willing to spread the word at SIU that foresters are in demand in Alabama. I currently have one vacancy in Clarke County, Alabama and I’m anticipating a couple of more in the state in the near future. There are also county forester positions that need to be filled within the AFC. To be listed on the State of Alabama job register, one needs to fill out an on-line job application form which can be done by going to the following link: http://www.personnel.state.al.us/Downloads/OESHelpDoc.pdf
The primary duty of an FIA forester is forest resource data collection from sample plots that are distributed evenly throughout the state. 80% to 90% of work time is spent in the field. FIA foresters are allowed to work 4 10-hour days and therefore, have 3 day weekends. Starting pay for a forester is just over $33,000/year.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Brian
