Know Why You\u2019re Reading the Article<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your time &amp; energy are precious resources. Decide why you\u2019re reading this article:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Looking for an overview of the field?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seeking specific data or methods?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluating the article\u2019s argument or theoretical framework?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Preview Scan Without Deep Reading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spend no more than 2-3 minutes scanning through to the article\u2019s conclusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skim abstract, section headings, subheadings, figures, and concluding remarks and find:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The paper\u2019s main argument &amp; research question<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The methodological rationale + the specific methods used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key findings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conclusions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Now decide whether the article is worth moving deeper into (Step 3) or just braindumping into your annotated bibliography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Deep Read: Break Down the Article\u2019s Structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Research articles pretty much universally follow standard structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abstract \u2013 A concise summary of the entire work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduction \u2013 Presents the background, research question(s), and significance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Literature Review\/Theoretical Background \u2013 Situates the study in existing research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methods \u2013 Lists data collection, analyses, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Results\/Findings \u2013 Presents data, stat output, key outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion \u2013 Interprets the findings, links back to research question &amp;\u00a0\u00a0literature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conclusion \u2013 Summarizes contributions, implications, limitations, and sometimes directions for future research.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Read Actively and Critically, Interrogate the Article<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduction &amp; Literature Review:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>What knowledge gap in the literature is this article trying to fill?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is the research question and\/or hypothesis clearly stated?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Methods:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Are the methods appropriate to answer the research question?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What are the assumptions or limitations of these methods?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Results:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>How are the results presented?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do they align with the stated hypothesis or research question?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discussion\/Conclusion:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Do the authors adequately explain why the results matter?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Are there alternative interpretations of the data?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What are the next steps or open questions?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aggressively annotate the text (e.g., highlighting, commenting in margins).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s yours to dissect and devour however your brain works best.\u00a0\u00a0This gives your active mind more high-quality contact time with the key \/ useful ideas in the article.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Take Organized Notes in Your Annotated Bibliography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use very short consistent template, e.g.:\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong>: A&nbsp;<em>short<\/em>&nbsp;paragraph capturing the main value.&nbsp;&nbsp;One sentence is usually plenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Points<\/strong>: Main argument, key finding, useful quote, anything that surprised you or that you disagree with. Not every detail needs your time\u2014grasp the overall argument and how it might apply to or inform your own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methods<\/strong>: Briefly outline the study design, data sources, or theoretical approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Critical Reflections<\/strong>: Strengths, weaknesses, biases, or questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Connections<\/strong>: How it relates to other readings or ongoing research interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collect these notes in your annotated bibliography.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t waste your time or energy on formatting etc.\u00a0\u00a0Just braindump it and move on.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t trust your brain to remember anything.\u00a0\u00a0Ever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Compare Other Sources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Decide how this article relates to previous articles or common themes in your field:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This article [ extends | refutes | seems to contradict \/ disagree with | confirms | nuances \/ explains | modifies ] this other journal article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to sketch \u201cconcept maps,\u201d diagram out your thoughts, or comparison charts for similar articles w\/\u00a0\u00a0similar research questions or comparable methodologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Should I hunt one key citation down for a deeper dive on this research topic?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Discuss Within Your Community of Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Journal Club: Research group discussions &amp; reading groups help catch blind spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Form a group to read the same article and compare notes.\u00a0\u00a0Everyone involved will get a\u00a0<em>lot<\/em>\u00a0more out of working together than alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage debate re: the article\u2019s strengths and weaknesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify areas of confusion: usually your colleague will process and\/or understand the article differently than you.\u00a0\u00a0Their understanding may help clarify yours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Evaluate Credibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider the journal\u2019s reputation, the citation count, authors\u2019 conflicts of interest, sample sizes, and methodological rigor. Not all journal articles are equal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss the impact factor or other metrics with caution\u2014while these may signal reputation,\u00a0<em>they don\u2019t guarantee quality<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you trust this source? Even reputable journals screw up occasionally, publishing flawed papers. Sometimes less-known journals can contain groundbreaking research\u2014because they\u2019re often much cheaper to publish in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Hone Your Incremental Reading Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify discipline-specific terminology.\u00a0\u00a0Transfer them to your personal glossary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focus on the research design and argument structure, even if the content is unfamiliar or not directly useful to your current project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
