Outdoor Recreation Grad Positions

1) Outdoor Education and Leadership Rental Center and Trips Graduate
Assistant*
*Responsibilities* The general responsibilities of the GA will include, but
are not limited to:
•Assist with the development and management of the Outdoor Education and
Leadership Program, specifically the Trip program, BuckWild Wilderness
Orientation Program, and the Outdoor Center including the equipment rental,
resource center and Outing Club. •Hire, train, and supervise students,
including the Rental Center Manager, Trips Manager, and Apprentice Trip
Leader Trainees for the Outdoor Education and Leadership program. •Evaluate
student employees through verbal and written reports. •Assist the Director
in the budgeting of operational expenses and student payroll. •Assist the
Director in assessment of student learning outcome initiatives. •Assist
Director in the design and implementation of staff trainings for the Rental
Staff and Trip Leader Training Program. •Assist in the development of the
semester Trips schedule including trip destinations/activities, budget
design, staffing, marketing, and assessment. •Co-Advise the University
Outing Club and Committees. •Plan and lead Trips during the semester and
some holiday breaks as needed. •Promote and market the Outdoor Education
and Leadership Program to the Bucknell community. •Compiling statistical
information of participation in all Outdoor Education and Leadership
programming areas and contribute monthly highlights. •Supervise staff
performing equipment inventory and make purchasing recommendations to the
Director. •Assist with Student Affairs special events and other duties as
assigned. •Serve as a contributing member to the Student Affairs Department.
*Qualification Requirements:* •Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Outdoor
Education, Education, or related field •Acceptance to College Student
Personnel Program at Bucknell University •Demonstrate strong leadership and
organizational skills, and a strong work ethic •Experience with a
collegiate adventure program leading diverse participants in backpacking
and at least one of the following areas: rock climbing, cross country
skiing, backcountry skiing, whitewater rafting, whitewater kayaking,
canoeing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, caving, surfing, sailing, or
challenge course facilitation. •Knowledge of use and maintenance of various
types of outdoor equipment •Knowledge and experience in employee
supervision and training •CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the
ability to obtain within 30 days of hire •Possess excellent written and
verbal skills •Computer proficient with various software including MS
Office, Adobe, Google documents, and social media outlets •Valid Driver’s
License and ability to meet University’s vehicle policies and procedures
•Position subject to criminal background check
*Preferred:* •Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid
•Experience in multiple outdoor recreation activities such as backpacking,
canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, winter recreational pursuits, or caving
•ACCT, ACA, or AMGA certifications
*2) Outdoor Education and Leadership Challenge Course and Bike Shop
Graduate Assistant*
*Responsibilities:* The general responsibilities of the GA will include,
but are not limited to:
•Assist with the development and management of the Outdoor Education and
Leadership Program, specifically the ClimBucknell challenge course,and the
Bison Bike Program. •Hire, train, and supervise students, including the
Challenge Course Manager and Bike Shop Manager for the Outdoor Education
and Leadership program. •Evaluate student employees through verbal and
written reports. •Assist the Director in the budgeting of operational
expenses and student payroll. •Assist the Director in assessment of student
learning outcome initiatives. •Assist Director in the design and
implementation of staff trainings for the Bike Staff and Challenge Course
Training Program. •Assist in the development of the scheduling, staffing,
marketing, and assessment for events, programming, and workshops within the
bike shop and challenge course. •Co-Advise the University Outing Club and
Committees. •Plan and lead challenge course events during fall and spring
break holidays as needed. •Promote and market the Outdoor Education and
Leadership Program to the Bucknell community. •Compiling statistical
information of participation in all Outdoor Education and Leadership
programming areas and contribute monthly highlights. •Supervise staff
performing bike shop inventory, challenge course equipment inspections, and
make purchasing recommendations to the Director. •Assist with Student
Affairs special events and other duties as assigned. •Serve as a
contributing member to the Student Affairs Department

Education, Education, or related field •Acceptance to College Student

Ropes challenge course facilitation, mountain, road, or bike touring trip
leading, bike mechanic and shop experience. •Knowledge of use and
maintenance of various types of outdoor equipment related to bike shops and
challenge course. •Knowledge and experience in employee supervision and
training •CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the ability to obtain
within 30 days of hire •Possess excellent written and verbal skills
•Computer proficient with various software including MS Office, Adobe,
Google documents, and social media outlets •Valid Driver’s License and
ability to meet University’s vehicle policies and procedures •Position
subject to criminal background check
*Preferred:* •Knowledge of bike mechanics •Challenge Course Facilitation
and ropes course management •Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First
Aid •Experience in multiple outdoor recreation activities •ACA, ACCT, or
AMGA certifications
*Supplemental Information:*
*Time Commitment:* The GA positions are an academic year assistantship
(August to May) for 20 hours per week on an established schedule that fits
with the students course demands, which may include weekdays, weeknights,
weekends, and some holidays. The students may have an opportunity for
summer employment with the Outdoor Education and Leadership Program.
*Contract Dates:* August 19, 2013 to May 19, 2014. Students may have the
ability to start employment earlier.
*Compensation*: 3 courses per semester, 6 courses per year, 12 courses over
2 years. A stipend of $10,550 will be paid over the academic year. There is
a 100% tuition waiver for eligible accepted students into the College
Student Personnel Program for fall and spring course loads. Graduate
students will be responsible for room and board, but the cost of Lewisburg
and the surrounding area is lower than most parts of the country. Students
will earn an additional salary for summer employment if desired.
