Shawnee Outdoors

Through joint partnership between U of I Ext, Friends of the Shawnee National Forest and SNF, the development of volunteer capacity programs for youth and young adults would address natural resource appreciation, work-force skills development and leadership skills, work ethics, and promote healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes. The partners have worked in numerous natural resource and leadership development programs and introduce youth to the strong cultural inheritance of the Southern Illinois area. The Friends of the Shawnee National Forest not-for-profit organization supports national forest programs and builds financial and volunteer support for programs within the southern Illinois region. The SNF would offer work with trails, volunteers, wilderness, environmental education, heritage, and recreation. Individuals will be involved in building sustainability and capacity in this 4 year. Up to five VISTAs would be used in the southernmost counties in the state of Illinois. VISTAs would assist in the development of a volunteer capacity program with goals of instilling leadership, developing land stewardship ethics and develop skills in natural resources, including trails. VISTAs working with the not-for-profit SNF Friends would provide leadership and build financial and volunteer capacity. This program would extend outreach to schools, and utilize social media technology for volunteer recruitment. Ideally, the programs would become established and self-sustaining over a period of one to three+ years either with existing staff, with schools or other organizations, or with the active participation of active volunteers and partners. Through partnership, this program would address some of the natural resource awareness and work force skills that are deficient in youth in this rural area. The program would motivate youth by rewarding them with affirmations and responsibilities, helping them build self-esteem as well as work force skills.
